What degree do I need to be a video game designer or developer?
|The desire to combine work and play is nothing new, and for decades, applicants have been flocking to the relatively-new field of video game designer, where work and play can converge. The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks data for the broader field of multimedia artist or animator, which includes work in the video field. Video game designers create two- and three-dimensional models and animation. Most video game designers work on cross-functional teams that can include fellow artists, designers and computer programmers.
Although not explicitly required by many employers, a bachelor’s degree in fine art, computer graphics, animation, or a related field is the typical level of education that most professionals need to make a start. Most employers request that applicants have a strong portfolio of work, which can be obtained during formal schooling, according to the BLS. Many employers use proprietary, company-specific computer animation programs, which new video game designers are expected to learn. Video game animation requires strong technical computer skills coupled with creative and drawing skills.
The BLS expects most animators to work for software publishers, for computer systems design firms or for advertising agencies. As technology evolves, professional development is becoming critical for video game designers. Formal instruction will probably never go out of fashion for this fast-paced field.
