What degree do I need to be a CEO?

One does not gaceoin the position of a CEO (Chief Executive Officer) in any company over night. And although obtaining a degree (or two) will guide you there, other components such as networking, staying with a company for a number of years, and a persistant work ethic are all important in obtaining this title with a company.

First, let’s examine the amount or level of higher education one must obtain to create the path to becoming a CEO. Most often, if not 100% of the time, a CEO has at least a Bachelor’s Degree in either Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Communications, Finance or a related field. But, as everyone knows, now more than ever jobs are competitive. So if you want that extra leg on your competition, it would be wise to obtain a Master’s Degree or a Second Bachelor’s that pertains to the company or companies you would like to work for.

Next let’s look at what it takes to build your way up in a company. To become a CEO after you have gained the degree(s) and knowledge to do your job well, you need experience. Generally speaking companies and board of directors want someone who not only has the education but also has 7 or more years of experience. Think of it this way – this company is investing in someone to lead an entire entity and make their business thrive and grow. Experience gives them security that you know what you’re doing and they won’t be looking for another CEO in 2 years.

Bottom line, becoming a CEO will take some time. If you want to become a CEO, first start with your education, gain experience, work hard and overtime you might just get there.
