What degree do I need to be a journalist?
If researching and reporting the news sounds intriguing to you, it might be time to consider a career in journalism. Whether you want to broadcast stories via video or stick to writing the news in print, you will likely need the same college degree in order to get ahead in this career. It is a good idea to figure out which degree you are expected to have before you start searching for journalism jobs.
Journalism Degree
In most cases, you will need a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Most colleges offer this degree and then feature concentrations you can choose from. For example, you can go for a journalism degree and then choose to focus on print, photojournalism, public relations, or broadcasting. But no matter which specialty you pick, you can expect to take at least a few classes on writing, broadcasting, and communication law so that you are well rounded in this field. You may be able to get this degree online if you do not have time to attend classes on campus, but just make sure the program you choose will result in a bachelor’s degree.
Related Degrees
If you don’t happen to have a degree in journalism, you might still have a chance of becoming a journalist. Some employers hire journalists who have a degree in a related field, such as communications or marketing. In such cases, you might have to show that you have some writing or broadcasting skills, which can be fulfilled either by having taken a few classes of this kind or related job experience.
Internships
Journalism can be a competitive field, so just because you have a degree does not mean you are guaranteed a job. Most employers want to hire journalists who already have some experience reporting the news. This is why you are encouraged to take on an internship as you get your degree or shortly after you graduate from college. You can choose to intern at a local newspaper, magazine, or news channel to get the experience employers are looking for these days. Many colleges even have radio stations and newspapers that encourage journalism students to participate so they get experience they can put on their resume.
